Fringe Ladder Necklace

I wanted to feature a more challenging project that used the techniques featured in the seed bead bar necklace project, so I made a fringe ladder necklace.

The necklace has three seed bead bars (the “steps”), four small chain pieces connecting the bars (the “connectors”) and six fringe chain pieces (the “fringe”).

I chose to use colors that reminded me of a variety of blues reflected in the ocean. The rhodium-colored chain contributes to the light, airy feel of the necklace.

It took me a couple of hours to make the necklace, so you could make a couple of necklaces on a weekend afternoon. You will spend most of your time assembling the ladder.

When you make the fringe ladder necklace, please follow these tips:

1) Make certain that you cut the connector pieces exactly the same length. Otherwise, the steps on the ladder will be uneven.

2) Lay the chain pieces flat to prevent kinking.

3) Close each loop as close to its bent angle as possible so that the chain pieces do not fall off the eye pin.

If you’re ready to make a fringe ladder necklace, let’s begin.

Materials and Tools

21 6/0 John Dory Czech seed beads in Retro Blue mix

3 1.25” rhodium eye pins

lightweight rhodium flat round chain cut into the following: 4 1/2-inch pieces (the “connectors”, 6 2-inch pieces (the “fringe”) and 2 9-inch pieces (the “strap”)

2 4mm silver-plated jump rings

1 silver-plated spring clasp

1 pair round nose pliers

1 pair bent nose pliers

1 side cutter

Instructions

Make the components for the ladder

Cut the chain pieces with the side cutter, then put them aside.

Begin making the steps by stringing 7 seed beads per eye pin.

Bend the tip of one beaded eye pin at a 45° angle with the round nose pliers. Next, make a loop in the opposite direction of the bent angle, but do not close the loop.

Repeat with the remaining beaded eye pins.

Now that we have made the parts of the ladder, let’s connect them.

Add the chain pieces to the bottom step

First, attach 3 pieces of fringe onto the loop that you just created onto one of the steps.

Next, attach a connector next to the fringe pieces.

Then, close the loop by tucking the end as close to the base of the loop as possible with the bent nose pliers.

Open the opposite loop of the step (i.e. the “eye” of the eye pin).

String the following onto the “eye”: 1 connector and the other 3 pieces of fringe. Close the “eye” per the instructions above.

Arrange the chain pieces on the bottom step so that the fringe hangs below the bar and the connectors extend above the bar.

Connect the middle step with the bottom step

String the left connector of the bottom step onto the opened loop of another beaded eye pin.

Next, string another connector onto this opened loop. Close the loop per the instructions above.

Then, open the “eye” at the end of this step. String the following onto this eye: the remaining loose connector and the right connector of the bottom step. Close the “eye” per the instructions above.

Arrange the loose connectors so that they extend above the middle step.

Connect the top step with the middle step

String the left connector from the middle step onto the opened loop of the remaining step.

Next, string one of the “straps” onto this opened loop. Close the loop per the instructions above.

Then, open the “eye” on the opposite side of this step. String the other “strap” and the right connector of the middle step. Close the “eye” per the instructions above.

Attach the clasp

Open a jump ring and attach it to one of the “straps”.  Close the jump ring.

Open the other jump ring. Attach the clasp and the other “strap” to it. Close the jump ring.
